NOITALS is a new and fascinating 3D printed sculpture created by artist Nick Ervinck. As a futuristic fossil from an alien culture, this work is mysterious and poetic at the same time, and does not readily fall into any one category. NOITALS resembles an energetic, monstrous creature that seems to come alive. The detailed design reminds us of eroded rocks and bones, while at first glance the sculpture seems more like a ghost from the future. The image conveys a sense of spirituality, religion and alienness all at once, and leaves the viewer feeling uncomfortable.
From thousands of designs, Ervinck chose a selection of images for further elaboration. These images were intertwined using different renders, each focused on reflection, colour and movement. This created an image that appears to have emerged straight from the virtual world but which cannot, in fact, simply be retrieved from the software.
Like a Rorschach inkblot, NOITALS can be interpreted from many different angles. We can recognize a mutated monster that could appear straight out of a sci-fi movie like Screamers (1995) or eXistenZ (1999). The movement and energy that is caught in the sculpture give the impression that the creature could come alive. At the same time, Ervinck succeeds to create a unique visual poetry, that reminds us of detailed baroque or rococo ornamentation.
NOITALS is an homage to Eadweard James Muybridge (1830–1904), one of the pioneers of photography, who created the zoopraxiscope, a device that mimicked moving images. This groundbreaking invention inspired many 20th-century artists to endeavor to incorporate movement, emotion and time into their own artistic medium. NOITALS is also the outcome of a similar quest for the free and dynamic form. Ervinck does not wish to merely revive this artistic tradition but to renew it and thus frames this experiment in the context of the 21st century. At his digital studio, he uses 3D software to explore the potential for innovation within this tradition.
NOITALS is a 3D printed sculpture that is part of the NOITEM-series, that consists of 2D prints and lightboxes. With these series of works, Nick Ervinck managed to capture the ephemeral using a concrete medium. The same illusion of movement is now in a unique way translated into a three-dimensional image, that Ervinck can only create through the newest 3D printing and software techniques.
By using his previous works as a source of inspiration and transforming them into a different medium, Nick Ervinck creates new insights and fascinating results. That way it becomes clear how his work keeps developing, and how Ervinck keeps pushing the boundaries of the possible.
